Dropping out is rarely a single decision

By Aime Pascal

When people talk about students who drop out, the language is often about a choice. They chose to leave. They gave up. It is a convenient story because it puts all the responsibility on one person and one moment.

It rarely happens like that.

Leaving school is usually a slow process made of small closings. A missed week because fees were late. A lesson that was not understood, then the next lesson that built on it, then the one after that. A teacher who moved on without noticing. A textbook the family could not buy. A long walk that became impossible during the rains. A job that appeared at exactly the wrong time. Each of these is small. Together, they close the door.

What is remarkable is how often the student could have returned if one of those moments had gone differently. A single person who noticed. A single catch-up lesson. A little help with a cost. That is why we believe so strongly in mentors and in learning that is easy to rejoin.

It also changes how we should think about second chances. Someone who left school has not shown that they cannot learn. They have shown that the circumstances around them were difficult. When they return, often years later, they bring something new: they know exactly why they want to learn, and they are not doing it because they were told to.

This is one of the reasons we are building a free online school with no entry test and no deadline. We want returning to be as easy as possible. You should not have to explain yourself, pay a fee, or sit in a room of younger students to start again. You should only have to want to.

If you left school, and you are wondering whether it is too late: it is not a verdict on your mind. It was a series of doors that closed. We would like to help you find one that is open.
