A textbook is a wonderful thing. It is patient, it is available at any hour, and it never tires of repeating itself. We have nothing against textbooks. But there are some things a book cannot do, and they are exactly the things that so often decide whether a student keeps going.
A mentor notices you. A book gives the same page to everyone. A mentor sees that you hesitate on certain kinds of questions, that you go quiet when a topic is mentioned, that you have stopped coming to class. That attention is a form of respect, and many students have simply never received it.
A mentor tells you what the path looks like. Much of what stops capable students is not difficulty. It is not knowing the next step. Which course should I pick? How does an application work? What should I do this month? A person who has walked the road can say, here is what comes next, and here is what I wish I had known. That saves years.
A mentor shows you that it can be done. This is easy to underestimate. Seeing someone from a similar background who made it through changes what feels possible. Success stops being an abstract idea and becomes a person you can talk to.
A mentor holds your confidence when you lose it. Everyone hits a moment when they believe they are not good enough. A book will not argue with you. A mentor will, kindly, and often at the right moment.
We should be honest about the other side too. A mentor can only help if they are the right person. That is why every mentor who applies to Imboni Academy is reviewed and confirmed by our team before they work with students, and why we ask what they want to help with and when they are available. A mentor relationship should be safe, reliable and clear.
If you have something you know well, and a few hours to give, you may be exactly what one student has been waiting for. We would be glad to hear from you.
